Hard-Won Victories
Cassino
Written and Narrated by Christopher Dunphie, assisted by Charles Dunphie.
The four battles for the small town of Cassino in central Italy in 1944 compare with any for sheer ferocity. Casting a shadow over the events, both physically and historically, was the ancient Benedictine monastery. Its destruction by the Allied air forces remains controversial to this day.
Both sides fought with great gallantry during a long winter in appalling conditions. The Allies' eventual breakthrough was achieved after heroic efforts by the troops of many different nations. Christopher Dunphie tells the story frankly and vividly, with the authority of one who knows the battlefield well
WATERLOO
"The closest run thing you ever saw in your life" was the Duke of Wellington's own verdict on one of the great decisive battles in European history.
Each side lost over 20,000 soldiers, but was it a British or an Allied victory?
Did Wellington win it, or did Napoleon lose it?
"We left the place reluctantly, much better informed and most agreeably entertained. I cannot recommend the experience too highly"
Dr Colin Niven
Falklands
Written and narrated by Hew Pike
During The Falklands War Hew Pike was the Commanding Officer of 3 PARA, for
which he was awarded the DSO. On this CD he tells his version of the story
of the war: it makes for compelling and sometimes uncomfortable listening
and gives a marvellous insight into the action from a key participant's
point of view.
"This is honest history from the horse's mouth, full of human detail and frank personal opinion... that makes you almost feel that you too are living through the war's many ups and downs." Christina Hardyment.
