Anzio

Anzio

Written and Narrated by Evelyn Webb-Carter

When the Allies' Italian campaign had reached stalemate at the Gustav line in 1943, the commanders, strongly supported by Churchill, decided on an amphibious landing at Anzio. The landing was unopposed but the subsequent operations were a near disaster. the "wild cat" envisaged became a "stranded whale", or, as German propaganda put it "The Beach Head has become a Death's Head". Anzio remains one of the most bloody and controversial battles of World War Two.

Discover why from Major General Sir Evelyn Webb-Carter who has visited the battlefield many times and conducted several tours there. His father was in command of the 1st Bn the Duke of Wellington's Regiment during the fighting.

Arnhem

Arnhem

Written and Narrated by Hew Pike

Operation Market-Garden was an optimistic but ill-fated attempt to bring about the collapse of the German Army in the West and to shorten the war. It involved airborne forces from 3 countries seizing a series of bridges and holding them until relieved by an armoured column moving up the road.

Too many things were badly planned or just went wrong and the German reaction was immediate and masterly. The armoured column's progress was painfully slow and, for the British and Polish airborne troops at Arnhem, theirs was indeed "a bridge too far".

Cassino

Cassino

Written and Narrated by Christopher Dunphie, assisted by Charles Dunphie.

The four battles for the small town of Cassino in central Italy in 1944 compare with any for sheer ferocity. Casting a shadow over the events, both physically and historically, was the ancient Benedictine monastery. Its destruction by the Allied air forces remains controversial to this day.

Both sides fought with great gallantry during a long winter in appalling conditions. The Allies' eventual breakthrough was achieved after heroic efforts by the troops of many different nations. Christopher Dunphie tells the story frankly and vividly, with the authority of one who knows the battlefield well

D-Day

D-Day (Double CD)

Brigadier Christopher Dunphie is an expert on the Normandy Landings and has lectured to hundreds of British, European and American visitors to the D-Day beaches.

In this double album he first sets the scene for the biggest invasion in history. In the second CD he takes the listener "onto the ground" to hear some of the most compelling stories from the British sector.

These are Pegasus Bridge, The Merville Battery and the two incidents arising from the landing on Gold Beach in which Sergeant Major Stan Hollis of The Green Howards won the only Victoria Cross of the day.

The Dunkirk Shield

The Dunkirk Shield

Few of the thousands of travellers passing through the ancient ports of Boulogne and Calais are aware of the fierce fighting that took place there in the dark days of 1940. The sacrifice of brave and disciplined British and French troops bought time for the miraculous evacuation from nearby Dunkirk. Historian Jon Cooksey's narrative is an easily absorbed addition to his books on these battles.
