The late Douglas Skene was a highly respected lecturer and leader of battlefield tours on the western front. Author and narrator of The Somme, he had the knack of presenting a measured and candid view of appalling events and of relating them to the context of their era.

During the Great War, Ypres, like Verdun, became a symbol of resistance to enemy invasion. It was a cause in its own right for which hundreds of thousands gave their lives.
